Australian Gourmet Traveller August, 1997 Andrew O'Keeffe Volume 97, No.8, Page 127 A balance of antiquity and functionality Esbelli Evi (Esbelli House) in rgp is a beautifully restored cave house. The subterranean section dates from the 5th and 6th centuries AD, while the upper section comprises five houses built in the 1890s. The owner, Sha Ersz, started buying the abandoned houses in 1987 and set about restoration to achieve a balance of antiquity and functionality. The guesthouse now comprises six bedrooms, few enough to ensure the house retains a homely feeling, with guest numbers limited to around 12. Service at Esbelli is as distinguished as the architecture. Welcoming guests as if they're returning family, Sha establishes a relaxed atmosphere from the outset. And he speaks English, French, Italian and Turkish. Guests have access to a kitchen, bar and refrigerator. Relaxation is easy in the carpeted music room, with Ottoman divans, embroidered curtains and bare sandstone walls. With commanding views over the village and valley, the outside patio is ideal for a late afternoon sip of raki, an aniseed-flavoured liqueur. The bedrooms are caves with names such as 'fireplace room', 'chimeney room', and 'honeymoon room'.
